IRS Form 6166 (U.S. Residency Certification) Apostille

Federal tax-residency proof, apostilled for foreign tax authorities

In short: IRS Form 6166 certifies that you or your business is a U.S. tax resident, so a foreign country will grant tax-treaty benefits or a VAT refund. It's a federal document, so it is apostilled by the U.S. Department of State — we coordinate that for you.

What Form 6166 is

Form 6166 is a letter from the IRS certifying U.S. tax residency. Foreign tax authorities ask for it so you can claim reduced withholding under a tax treaty, recover foreign VAT, or do business abroad without being taxed twice. Many of those authorities will only accept it once it has been apostilled.

Who needs it apostilled

Businesses and individuals with foreign-source income, U.S. companies claiming treaty benefits or VAT refunds abroad, and anyone a foreign tax office has asked to authenticate their U.S. residency certificate.

Getting the 6166 first

Form 6166 is issued by the IRS after you file Form 8802, and the IRS can take several weeks — so start early. Once you have the 6166 in hand, we coordinate the federal apostille. If you're still waiting on the IRS, we'll tell you what to expect so the apostille step is ready the moment it arrives.

How it works — a 100% remote process

 1. Tell us what you need. Call or text 847-436-5222 or request a quote. We confirm the exact document and the destination country.
 2. Send us your document. Mail or courier it to our Naperville office.
 3. We coordinate the U.S. Department of State apostille. Federal documents are authenticated in Washington, D.C., not by Illinois — we handle the submission and follow it through.
 4. We return it, tracked. Back to you or straight to your recipient, domestic or international, with status you can follow the whole way.

Cost & turnaround

Our service starts at $99 per document; return shipping is billed at cost, or you provide a prepaid label. Federal processing at the U.S. Department of State is currently running about 9 business days once received, plus shipping each way — typically about two weeks door to door. Timelines shift at the federal level; call or text 847-436-5222 for today's estimate.

Apostille or legalization?

Hague Apostille Convention country: the federal apostille is enough. Non-member country: it needs authentication and embassy legalization, which we also handle. See apostille vs. authentication vs. legalization.
